Located just past the hubbub of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, Hickory Nuts Falls is a great spot to call home for a weekend. We went in early November, so most of the Fall colors had made their appearance. This is a pretty small family-owned campground with pretty tightly packed spaces, but we never felt cramped because we got the back spot (the bear spot according to the owner). The road circling around to the backside spots is a little sketchy in spots, so if you've got a low car just...drive carefully. This place has got the feel of like...a time share for sheds. The covered camping platform was nice even if it was rickety and bared-wired. Great to have electricity for a few essentials, but you can still ignore all that and have a more primitive experience (and still have your tent covered from the worst of it). Just make sure you've got a good pad. If you're going full electric, bring a few cords and power strips so you can take advantage. They've got bathrooms, showers, and firewood on-site, so you'll be comfortable here for a whole weekend (or more). Staff (owner) was great, said they lived just down the road and could get in touch with them if we needed. I'll take a look next time I'm in the area - great value and experience just off the main drag.
Full hookups + cable TV on the River. Definitely not a resort style campground, but to me that’s the best part about it. I’m not a fan of resort camping. All the staff we interacted with were very nice and helpful Nice views from the riverfront campsites. RV sites were a bit close, not KOA close, but close. The bathhouses were clean, but could stand a renovation. We never saw any bears, that they said was a possibility. Close proximity to the village of Chimney Rock. We enjoyed it, though, and will definitely plan a return trip in the future. Possibly next year.
My husband and I just returned (last night) from a stay at one of the tent sites. If I could give this campground more than 5 stars, then I would. The sound of the river is incredibly peaceful and the riverfront sites are literally right on the river. We had no worries about safety - its a great family friendly campground. We already called this morning to see about booking a site in the spring and summer. We are going to be "regulars" for sure. Thanks again for a perfect getaway. :) The Hatfields, Manning, SC
This campground is in an amazing location along the Rocky Broad River. Campsites along the river have fairly loud river noise, which I find relaxing & therapeutic. There are quite a few full hookup sites in this area. Tent camping is available one level above the river (near bathrooms, office & game room). Much of the campground is taken up with “seasonal” sites. There are also a variety of cabins for rent. There are some things to be aware of. As you turn off of the main road, it is onto a single-lane narrow bridge over a raging river. If you have a camper, you will need to swing wide & watch your camper closely. Also, sites are tightly packed. If you have a larger camper, you will want to have a frank conversation with staff about how realistic it is to fit your rig into the site. I brought a 30 ft 5th wheel pulled by a Chevy 2500 & it took quite a few tight turns to access site 9. Bath house is well equipped & clean, but nothing special. Stalls are very short with little privacy. Two functional shower stalls on the women’s side. Staff were friendly & helpful. Can’t beat this location for short term camping in Chimney Rock.
Perfect location by the river in the trees. Wonderful staff, very helpful. It could be an amazing campground with a little up keep would be much better. Something needs to be done with the bathrooms that reek of sewer. The roads need to be fixed. They are very dangerous. I would go back my husband would not.
The views are five star ⭐️! Absolutely gorgeous sites situated along the river. Close to Chimney Rock and not a far drive from Asheville and surrounding cities. Apple orchards within 20-30 minutes. Really lovely area!
The downsides, and take this with a grain of salt as I think we just had bad luck, was the number of dogs barking nonstop near our site. There were a total of TEN dogs on either side of us. One family who put their large dog in a small crate without water access and he barked incessantly. We did alert the campground owners but the dog still barked a lot. Thankfully those people left after one night. The campsites are also very narrow so you feel kind of closed in. The other downside to this campground was the bathrooms. We stayed in our RV but on the last day before we left and had already dumped our tanks, I stopped in to use the campground bathroom. One of the two toilets was clogged and overflowing, there was TP and bugs everywhere, and it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. I had flies landing on me as I used the toilet and got out of there as fast as I could. So, tent campers beware.
All this aside we will come back but likely during the week when there are fewer people (and hopefully barking dogs) and plan to not use the bathroom at all. The owners are very nice!!
This campground was a nightmare. Our original site had a raised platform with a picnic table. The planks on the platform were broken and the whole thing was seriously unstable. The road around the campground was virtually impassable. We suffered serious damage to our car!!! The bathhouse was run down and dirty. The pictures and description are totally misleading. The tent sites were rocky and sandy. Overall just a run down, filthy, cluttered mess. Awful!!!
Absolutely beautiful! Ive been camping here since I was about 4 years old. It's my favorite campground and I try to come up here every year. The views are gorgeous and the people are always friendly.
